Portholes diameter

Postby Dmitriy on Fri May 10, 2024 6:20 am

Hello, builders!
I want to discuss the size of the portholes.
The size that is offered according to the drawings is very small, I think. Something about 65 mm. I'm talking about the inner diameter through which you can look and receive light.
Either in the manual or on the forum, I read that it is possible to increase the size of the portholes, but do not get too carried away with this, as it can weaken the sides.

Has anyone who has already built a boat enlarged the portholes? In what sizes?

I would like to make my portholes about 75-80 mm in diameter in the clear part. I think this will not reduce the strength of the sides. Besides, I want to make flanges inside and outside.

Or maybe the original size offers is quite convenient to use?

Hello Dmitriy,

are you talking about radius or diameter? Our kit contained eight rings which we used to build our portholes. The inner diameter (= true window size) is about122 mm.

As we had the rings, we just used them 'as is'. I think the size is fine.

Thank you, Dietrich! I'm really dummy :o
Indeed, we are talking about the radius, and I did not carefully study the drawing.
I photographed the portion of the drawing with the porthole and studied it so as not to carry the paper into the garage.
The photo does not show the actual size and I mistakenly thought that the diameter was indicated. At the same time, I look at photos of finished boats and see nice large portholes.
Very stupid mistake, I'm very ashamed.
I've been thinking about this problem for several days

The original size suits me quite well.
