Time to Launch

Postby Brent65 on Mon Aug 09, 2021 6:32 pm

Pocketship owners,

After having built 2 Scamps and 1 Skiff America, I'm trying to decide on my next build. I'm looking for a small sailboat that rigs extremely fast and offers a hard cabin for two, one that can be motored with the mast down (in the event of poor conditions) and can be rigged on the water. Am I on the right track?

How long on average does it take you to launch Pocketship? How hard is it to reef? Does it skate on the anchor all night?

Best,
Brent

The Scamp was on my short list, and I read the build manual, before I ultimately decided to build a Pocketship. I started my build last December and I'm mostly
finished: the boat is flipped, I'm painting the lower hull, and the spars are all built. I would guess that a Pocketship is about 2x the work of a Scamp.

I am nearing the end of my Pocketship build, so I can't answer your questions on performance from personal experience, however there are a couple of excellent videos that should answer several of your questions:

As far as time to build... I am at the far extreme from Doug... I am nearing 8 years, but there has been a thousand personal and health issues that has resulted in the marathon build. There are several great videos and blogs that can provide you with everything you need to know to make the right decision. For me, it was very simple... Eight years ago I was looking to build a kayak, and when I saw the first picture of Pocketship and then saw the video of her under sail... it was love at first sight. Eight years later I'm still in love.
