Cockpit space

Postby Creekboater on Sun Nov 21, 2021 1:15 pm

Before deciding to build PS, i’m trying to get a feel for the size of the cockpit. In particular, how well (or not) 4 adults would fit during a ‘light’ sail. light wind/wave.

I’d love to hear thoughts from folks who’ve been sailing PS…

Thanks much.

Mark out on the floor an area the same size and shape as the main deck (e.g. with tape), and then sit in it with a few other people.
That would give you a rough idea. Although the footwell is narrow, the deck is fairly wide, and the cabin wall and seatbacks are comfortable.

Didn’t mean for that question mark.

I have not sailed a Pocketship yet, though I have done some pretending in my boat under construction! The cockpit seems roomy, but from experience in other boats , you need to consider what happens when you tack. The cockpit area around the tiller is not very useable as you need to move around the front of the tiller when tacking. There are a lot of images on the web of the Pocketship under sail and that may help. From what I see, three is comfortable but four might be a bit tight.

I rarely sail with less than 4, and have had up to 7 adults at a time in total. The cockpit can definitely sit 6 easily, although you wont be moving around much or switching sides while tacking(three sit on each side). The tiller (and mainsheet) do take up room however. I agree with the idea to lay out the cockpit area on the floor. You could even rig up where the tiller and main sheet would be.

I have also had 4 adults and two kids aboard but I wouldn’t recommend it as standard sailing practice. Pocketship is a real joy to sail either solo or with one other, but with more than two aboard it becomes difficult to move about and I wouldn’t recommend it in anything other than light winds. Of course, this is just one person’s opinion.

Maybe it depends on how ‘agile’ the crew is: 6 young adults or 2 old folks!
