Outboard Motor Question

Postby SMHolmans on Sat Feb 19, 2022 7:14 am

Hi all. Me again! I'm looking at outboards and my first question is what length shaft do I need?

Thanks!

15 inch (short shaft). That's what CLC uses on the prototype. It's what I happily use,. Clearing the rudder endplate is a consideration and the 15" easily does that. Some have argued for the longer shaft being better in waves. I'm sure that's true, but I would think it would be hard to keep from dragging a long shaft motor through the water in it's up position, especially when heeled, and be uglier. It's a compromise.

What sort of motor and mount are you using? I have been researching motors and their dimensions, and it seemed
to me that a long shaft would be necessary to get the motor body high enough to keep it from hitting the transom in the up position.
