One coat of epoxy prior to any work?

Postby Creekboater on Fri May 27, 2022 10:47 am

Hello all,

My kit arrived this week and I'm about to get started.

I'm looking for holes that can be poked in this plan...

All the plywood is taking up quite a bit of space. I am considering my first step to be cutting out every single piece from the sheets and applying two coats of unthickened epoxy to each piece. Reason for the epoxy is that I want to avoid the possibility of pieces warping as they wait many many months to be installed. Plus, at least two coats will need to be applied at some point anyway. It seems efficient to just get that knocked out at once. And then I'm left with smaller pieces that can be stored easier while they await install.

The only consideration I can think of is how this might affect glue ups later on. Is it better to glue to bare wood? That kind of thing.

Ready, aim...

Martin

A lot of pieces need glassing one one or both sides, and I think it
would be a waste to pre-coat pieces that will later get glassed.

I put a lot of medium size pieces under the beds in my guest bedroom: they
were out of the way, and were laying flat in a controlled environment, so
warping was not a problem.

The pieces that need most to be kept flat are bulkhead 2 and the rear cabin wall.
They warp more easily because of the holes in them, and they really need to be
flat when installed.

Ah, duh. Wasn't thinking about glass. Good point.

G'Day Martin,
I'm currently at the stitching stage and to make work easier further on in the build I epoxy coated and sanded a number of pieces. It is much easier to do this while the pieces are flat on a bench or work horses. Some pieces are glassed and then sanded ready for paint and others are epoxy coated and sanded.
In regards to plywood warping, I store my sheets vertically on a wall with clamps holding the sheets tight together but you need a big wall.

Hooky, I think I'll end up doing much the same as you. Like Doug said, lots of pieces need glass too. I like the idea of having a lot of the pieces prepared ahead of time. Will save me some space and maybe keep me moving better.
