Cabin Storage

Postby Brent65 on Tue Jun 14, 2022 11:24 am

Fellow Pocketship Builders,

I thought I would share a mod I just fabricated on my PS to increase cabin storage for small items, like your radio, water bottle, snacks or a torn tee-shirt. See link below if interested:

G’Day Brent,
This is a good idea mate, I did this on my previous trailer sailer a Mach 28 and the space provided was big enough to store the toilet paper, chemicals and a first aid kit, mind you this was a slightly bigger yacht but good use of space, well done. I will consider doing the same when I get to that stage.
Been following your Blog and your build is coming along well.

Cheers Terry

Hey Brent and Gents

I like that mod a lot! Timely also as that's exactly what I'm working on now.

Hey, any concern about the loss of floatation?? Prob not - but 'Murphy's Law'
has kicked me in the nose more than once when cruising (understated!)

Good luck; best wishes

Jimmy V,

Thanks for the comment and question. My 2 cents...I'll have much bigger issues to deal with if water reaches this level inside my cabin that these storage areas. That said, I did seal the compartment at the back bulkhead to keep things from migrating beyond my reach and to seal the middle chamber for flotation.

I just cut the holes for my seat back storage. I temporarily mounted the hatches to show what i did.

I thought (as others did) it would be handy to have a little storage area inside the cabin. Again, like others, I used the back section of the port seat back. I closed off the opening in the last seat back frame, and divided the section into two areas, one atop the other. The lower has a 4" opening to the cabin. The upper one is filled with bits of foam right now, but i may cut another hole to access it. Since I'm losing foam flotation in the other area, I wanted to make it reasonably water tight. I wanted a port cover with an attached lid, but could not find anything small enough.I had already designed a sealing port to use for the cabin vent openings for the Dorades and I used the same design here. I printed it out in ABS on a Stratasys 3D printer. It uses a standard O-ring. A small twist of the cover tightens it down.

I also wanted a place accessible from the cockpit for all the little stuff that rolls around: binoculars, sunscreen, flashlight, etc, so I used the starboard rear seat back section for this. Here I found a small rectangular hatch that fit the area nicely: DPI Marine® DPF912PW - Flush Series 12-3/16" L x 9-1/8" W Polar White Inspection Hatch. I got mine from BoatID.

Another storage idea I had but did not implement would be to put a piece of PVC drain pipe along the inside top of the seat back; open to the cabin. One could roll up charts and store them there. Could even add a screw clean out to keep it dry.
