Anyone build without a tabernacle?

Postby gregfliesjets on Tue Jun 28, 2022 8:38 pm

Hello all,

In love with this design, but limited to a standard 7’ garage door for storage. Looks like an easy fit without tabernacle and boom gallows. Am I wrong? I’ve searched all over and have not seen one example of someone doing that. I bought and read the manual and see a few sentences about deleting the tabernacle. I’m a newb when it comes to sailing. I want Pocketship to be my experience builder beyond the ASA courses. If the tabernacle is deleted, what does that do to the setup and takedown time at the boat ramp?

Appreciate your thoughts.

I’d imagine you’re in for a world of trouble rigging if you were by yourself. Search the forum, there are several people who have made their tabernacle removable. If you really want to forego it altogether, the manual states that removing it completely is fine and describes how.

John drew a lug rig option for PocketShip. I think that was unstayed, so it'd be easy to set up. That'd probably be an attractive option if you wanted to eliminate the tabernacle.

This has been done by several builders. I intend to do it as well.

I see that searching on ‘tabernacle’ doesn’t work, but if you search for ‘removable’ you’ll find several posts about making a removable tabernacle. In one John shares a design:

download/file.php?id=189

It does require extra reinforcement of the bulkhead and its attachment to the cabin top.

I haven’t gotten to this point yet but I imagine the gallows can be removed fairly easily.

As mentioned already, in the manual there is a mention of forgoing the tabernacle but that it complicates rigging the boat, especially single-handed.
