Companionway flange plan

Postby slash2 on Fri Aug 19, 2022 1:47 pm

I’m working on a Pocketship that I bought partially assembled from a kit. So far all the parts have been there, but I now seem to be missing the companionway flange pieces. They are on the same plywood as the bulkheads so it may be they got tossed before I got it. I think I can figure out what is needed and I have enough 9mm ply, but it would be nice to have the actual drawings for that part. Or at least some measurements: width of sides, height of bottom part, overall width and height. I’d appreciate it if some one could help me out this.thanks!

Steve, I'm assuming you mean the side flanges on the inside or the ones on the outside? I did not have a template for the outside ones and made those from scrap leftovers. I can grab measurements for either or both.
Link to my ps photo gallery, should be the 8 most recent pics for ya

Sorry- inside flange. Looks like in the kit it’s two pieces with a puzzle joint. I can kinda guess what it should be, but it would be nice to have it somewhat similar to the plan.

On the outside I’ll be using white oak and that part seems to more ‘free form’.

Dang - great progress Drew! Looks great!!

Thanks! I'm slowing down a bit because I forgot to enjoy the process. I've uploaded another image from the cnc layout in the gallery which you can probably scale up using the measurements I grabbed pics of. I'm not sure why it was a puzzle join but it might have been because of layout efficiency.
Thanks,

Thanks for the pic. I was looking at that drawing in the assembly manual but I thought it was too small to scale up well. But it looks like the flanges are about 2” wide, though in pictures I’ve seen it seems to stick into the companionway 1 1/2” or so.

Steve, it's about inch reveal all the way round. Added some pics with cover off and tape measure. Radius inside corner goes to 2" and horizontal and vertical are 1"
Thanks,

Perfect! Thanks so much!

I installed the cabin top today. Can’t wait to remove that temporary piece over the companionway entrance. Really makes it hard to get in and out if that space.

I decided to trim in white oak. I found a one man sawmill in the area that has a good supply. I’ve always been fond of oak. I decided to steam bend the curved cabin top supports just to lean how to do it. The oak bends well and it came out pretty good.

Well looks like I have a (truly) boatload of fiberglass to do now.
