I purchased a partially built pocket ship and am working on the seatback framing. the manual mentions a temporary frame positioned back next to the transom to assist the alignment with the longitudinal framing. on my boat, the previous owner permanently installed this aft most frame about 3" from the transom (lower measurement). i would like to leave it in place if possible. my question is how far forward of the transom skirt is the hole for the gallows stanchion? i could not find a reference to this in the manual. it looks like most are installing a mooring cleat between the gallows and the t skirt. i am looking for a dimension to help me make my decision.

If you measure from the transom edge trim on mine, the two cleats holes on mine are about 2" and 3" out from that edge. The Center of the hole for the gallows pipe is 5 3/4" from my edge. Others may have done differently but that seemed to give me enough clearance to have the line accessible while using the cleat. I essentially eyeballed it with keeping functionality in mind, along with ensuring I'd pass through the blocking below. Hope this helps but recommend a quick layout to make sure it works in your case.

I placed my vertical posts more forward than most, at 11" forward of the transom skirt (see photo).

Reasons why, just my 2 cents:
1-I wanted a little more room to board the boat over the transom from the lake before having to duck under it.
2-It moves the weight forward in the boat which helps with trim
3-It's a little easier to grab the vertical post for support when boarding the boat from the side at a dock
4-It allowed plenty of room for a large aft cleat to secure the boat when tying up.
5-It provides better support for the mast when trailering (probably insignificant).

One note of caution regarding moving the gallows location forward; When sailing, the boom is at an upward angle where the boom tip is higher than at the gooseneck. Because of this angle, the more forward the gallows is located the higher the gaff needs to be to lift the sail sufficiently to clear the gallows. This could prevent the mainsail from being properly trimmed in lighter wind where the elevated gaff can cause the mainsail to have a diagonal crease.
