Ideas for color schemes, inside and out

Postby Creekboater on Thu Mar 30, 2023 8:36 am

Hello all,

Still early in the build, I'm thinking about color schemes. I might want to do some wood staining and now would be the time.

I'm going to leave my topsides, spars, companionway top, and rudder cheeks bright and paint everything else. Or so I think at the moment.

I'm interested in seeing pics of pocketships finished similarly. I've of course perused the Photos thread here but it hasn't been added to in a while and just curious if anyone out there has additional pics with bright topsides, etc.

Also...in general I'm interested in cabin photos as well.

I guess you could post here or the Photos thread, or private message me.

Thanks much!

You mention checking the photos, but have you gone through the blogs? There are a lot of great examples there with good shots of all parts of the boat. Certainly a lot are build photos, but there are also a lot of finished shots. There are also some you tube videos as well.

Lord I’ve probably read every blog two or three times. But I haven’t really looked for you tube stuff. Good idea, thanks.

For my hull, I shamelessly copied the color and details of Pocketship #1, because of all the paint jobs I saw, I liked it the best.
(John Harris saw it in person, and he was flattered.)

I think the exact height and width of its boot stripe are perfect, especially since they camouflage the sharp chine in the front part of the hull.
Another nice-looking thing was the curved masking lines on the transom. It's more work to do the masking, but the result is more elegant
and professional-looking. Also, the Interlux blue covers well.

One other thing I did was to varnish pretty much all the exposed mahogany on the topsides: the inner rub rails and breasthook in the bow, the trim across the top
of the transom, and the cabin roof rails. I was worried it would look "cute", but it turned out quite nice. And the varnished surfaces seem to be more wear-resistant
than the white-painted parts of the topside.

All my spars were epoxied and varnished, and after one season, they look as good as new. (I used Interlux Schooner varnish, and it works very nicely for me.)
