PocketShip builds in UK?

Postby SMHolmans on Mon Apr 24, 2023 2:12 pm

About once year I put a post on here asking if anyone is building a PocketShip in the UK, and I never get a reply.

So here I am posting in 2023, hoping that maybe ... just maybe ... there is another UK builder out there who would like to get in touch?

I can't be the only person in the UK building this lovely little yacht. Can I?

Here's hoping ...

Hi, I am just in the process of deciding whether to build the Pocketship. I built a CLC Tenderly during the lockdown which I use once or twice a week but fancy something that I can go further afield. I have read your whole blog and it looks like you are close to launch. I am interested to see a Pocketship in person before deciding. I am based in North Kent (Bromley)

I am also trying to find out just how capable the boat would be. Do you think it would be up to sailing in the Solent in 25 - 30 knot winds? The other concern might be the tides, what sort of speed through the water are you expecting when under power, trying to figure if this would overcome some of the tides on the south coast. In reality though, I may end up trying to find some decent inland bodies of water.

Have attached a picture of my Tenderly just in case you are interested

Hi John.
Thanks for the enquiry. I plan to do my sailing in sheltered coastal waters i.e. estuaries and bays, so crossing open water isn't on my list of requirements for my boat.
So my honest answer is I don't know about strong winds and tides in the Solent. Why not ask CLC what they think? Or maybe Fyne Boat Kits here in the UK?
You are welcome to visit to look at my build. I am just outside Oxford, so quite a trek for you from Kent. You can message me if you wish to arrange something.

Check "Alan Hulme's Appropriate Footwear" on Youtube. He's somewhere in Blackpool and the Lake District. He has an interesting series of short videos detailing his build.

Apparently I'm a boat builder. I will have to wait to find out if I'm a sailor.
