Stern light on boom gallows?

Postby Creekboater on Mon Oct 09, 2023 1:04 pm

I am thinking of a place to mount a stern light. I’m thinking I want a low profile light flush mounted on top of the boom gallows. Gets it up in the air and would be out of the way of ‘stuff’.

I’d run my electrical inside my gallows pole.

It seems I’ve heard of someone doing this but I can’t recall the culprit. I’m wondering if anyone has done this, how well it’s worked out.

Thanks,
martin

Martin,

I vaguely remember that the stern light should be at the same height as port and starboard lights. But I am not 100% sure about the regulations, please check.

My stern light was inspired by this setup: https://www.clcboats.com/media_gallery/ ... =2&next=23

It is actually a battery-operated light (which I have never had to actually use). I 3D printed a mounting base:

The lamp shines further forward than the regulations specify, but I doubt anybody would care. And it will work OK as an anchoring light.

My forward light is the same type, but with a split red/green lens, and it is mounted on the breast hook in a way that
allows it to shine in the correct direction.

I leave both lights in the cabin, until the need arises to use them.

G'Day Martin,
I just completed a number of mods in the seat back void area one of which was running wiring for a stern Nav light to be located on the boom gallows. I prepared timber laminated bases for the base of the gallows pole and drilled a hole through its middle down into the lazarette area so I can run the wire up through the gallows pole.
Check it out on the blog

Yep, I've already noticed that and was glad to see it! I'd be curious as to what light you end up using. I've not been able to find anything that's 360 deg and low profile (i.e. not on a pole).
