mounting companionway hasp and staple

Hello,

I always wonder why the hasp is mounted at the hood and the staple at the drop board. First, I am afraid to scratch my head at the hasp when entering into the cabin (if the hasp is hanging down). Second, my inner eye sees myself on a cold evening in the cabin, with drop boards inserted and hatch closed, then the hasp drops down over the staple and I get trapped in the cabin.

Probably I am missing something, but why not just swap hasp and staple?

I think you could jiggle the hatch enough to free the hasp if it closed on
you.

I actually don’t care for the hasp - all boats seem to use it but to me it looks like an afterthought. I’m trying this on mine:

It’s brass sliding door lock that pushes into a cup glued into the sliding hatch.

As I recall it’s a McMaster

Here's how I did it. It requires two staples. You have to scroll on the images to see the whole thing. I think dbeck's idea has merit.
