choosing wood

Postby arnie on Wed Oct 21, 2009 9:51 pm

I don't know much about wood and have been thinking about best choices for floorboards, companionway, rails, tiller etc. There is a wonderful lumber yard called Frank Paxton and they regularly have specials. This month there is a lot of walnut at a very good price. Would this be a good choice? Also some Ipe they are closing out which I thought might be good for the floorboards. Any thoughts/advice much appreciated.

If you don't want to mill your own floorboards I found solid teak pre-finished teak hardwood flooring that worked out nice for my Pocketship. Since the hardwood planks cannot be the length of the cabin I doubled up the floorboard cleats so there was more to attach the boards to at their end joints.

My blog has more details and pictures

I found oak flooring in 8' & 12' lengths at Home Depot and Lowes. Wasn't cheap, but saved a lot of time over milling my own. You can see the result at http://gallery.me.com/jermcmanus Good luck. Jer
