Making the mast and spars

I read another post that says 2x6 can be used for the mast and spars. What's the best way to turn a 2x6 into 3/4x3 for use in making the mast? Also, why cant I use a 2x4? They have 16' 2x6' at the home center that look straight to me. How do I know it will remain straight after I buy it? I really don't want to scarf anything if I don't have to.

I found whitewood pine, Btr pine, pine radiata and lots of Douglas fir. They are all 3/4" thick but I would have to scarf a couple pieces together to get to 16'. Does anyone know which would be best or if all are usable for the mast and spars? No one seems to have Sitka spruce.

Go to a good lumber yard and get Douglas fir. If they can not plan it for you, find a smaller cabinet shop that will plane it. If you can find a friendly cabinet shop they can be a big help finding material and milling your lumber to size. I've found one that has been real helpful but I had to promise him a ride when done.
