Brass Hardware

Postby JonLee on Mon Nov 01, 2010 1:51 pm

When I think brass, I think of a place called Corrosion City. Yet, I've noticed several people using brass hardware (like Dave's brass deadlights, etc), and I've noticed several otherwise reputable chandleries ply brass wares as well. So what's the deal? Am I wrong? Are there types of brass that are actually ok? My frame of mind is very saltwater-environment-centric, so does that have something to do with it?

I'd like to have some fancy deadlights instead of the acrylic ones, but bronze and SS are a little pricey (that's an understatement).

My brass deadlights will only see fresh water so corrosion wasn't much of a concern. The 4 deadlights were purchased from greenboatstuff and cost $259 CDN including all shipping and taxes. Unfortunately , they were manufactured by ABI which has gone out of business.

Me thinks bronze, chrome plated bronze, stainless, or ABS.
