Timber and Lead

Postby John C. Harris on Tue Dec 07, 2010 1:48 pm

I've purchased a pile of a scrap lead, now cluttering up a corner of the shop. It's in 15-45 pound chunks, basically 100% pure so it's very soft. (You can chop it into smaller bits with a bandsaw or even a chainsaw.) $2.00/pound if anyone would like to pick some up. Not much fun to ship... Just shoot me an email: http://www.clcboats.com/forms/contact_us.html

We also have, by popular request, organized "timber packages" for PocketShip's non-plywood bits. Tracking down local materials is still likely to be a bit cheaper, but not if it's the same quality as this timber and definitely not if your labor to find it is applied. It's a good thing you didn't post this about 2 months ago or I would have driven from California to pick some up. I spent a lot of time scrounging bits and pieces together and some was not even lead. But that job, melting and pouring the lead, is behind me and, as usual, was much less daunting once I actually did it.

My wife told me she had a source for lead but when it came time to pour her "source" fell through. So it sent me scrambling online. The best I found was at this link:

http://www.rotometals.com/product-p/lea ... im_bag.htm

You get 50lbs for 72.99 AND FREE SHIPPING!

This lead is in shot form and melts easily... I did have skim off a couple of spoonfuls of junk for every 10lbs I melted.

Lots of people on Ebay sell lead. Mostly wheel weights melted into pigs of 4 lbs or so. Some offer free shipping. I bought about 60 lbs. each from 2 different sources. As I recall, the average price worked out to about $1.30 per lb. but each auction is different.
