Problem with floor support alignment

Postby Shudoman on Sat Jan 01, 2011 11:22 am

Hi All,

I was wondering if anyone has any ideas where I went wrong.

I'm building from a kit and have the lower hull stitched together. Everything seemed to come into alignment perfectly, all bulkheads right on and everything else in place as it should be. Took some measurements from bow to the transom corners to ensure symmetry. All good.

However, when I laid a straight edge across the floor supports it appears that the support I pre-glued on to bulkhead #2 is about 1/2" too high! Doh!

I went back to the plans an they show that the top of that support should be 5 9/16" above the base (lowest point) of bulkhead #2. So I went back and measured it guess what? 5 9/16" exactly!

How could I be so far off when everything seems so right? Any ideas why this could be? I know I can fix it when I start laying the floor boards by trimming it down and adding the same amount to the bottom of the support. It's not really that big a thing BUT I would like to know where I made my error.

Thanks,

Bill

Hmmm. Has anyone else seen that issue?

Bill,
I had that same problem - for me I measured about .4" too high. To fit it I trimmed off .4" from the bottom of the floor board with a router. ( See description in my blog; http://buildingpocketship.wordpress.com ... tallation/). I did notice that it looks like Jeff had the same issue from looking at his pictures - I think he added another support that was a bit lower to align with the floor boards. John - another note - the "2" that is on the bulkhead is also a bit high as it shows up above the floorboards. I could have previously filled it in with epoxy, but never did.

Bill/John I had the same problem, However I left the high support in place and sistered on an additional support at the correct height. If you look at my blog you will find a photo of it. I don't think it matters much and no one will question the look. I wish I knew how it happened. Jeff

Whew!

I'm glad to know it's not just me. Thanks guys for re-affirming my ability to read dimensions! Anyway, I like the look of what Jeff did and I might go that route. Thanks again, I'm so relieved!

I didn't experience this problem but I was building from plans only and not a kit. I don't really think that could be the difference but it was just a thought because I did have a minor problem with floorboards lining up with the stitch holes in the hull due to a draftsperson's error on the plans. That slight problem was documented on my blog at:

I'm still working on my "practise" stitch and glue projects, but when I get to the PocketShip, I had been thinking of raising the height of the floorboards slightly to match the height of the part of the centreboard trunk that "as designed" is a bit above the floor. Any comments from anyone that has already completed their PocketShip?
