Boat Insurance

Postby aschilpp on Tue May 31, 2011 10:19 pm

Ahh yes, the practicalities of ownership....

Does anyone have any thoughts/recommendations on boat insurance? I spent a lot of time and money building my new toy and the last thing I want to see is someone rear end my trailer while route to my next ramp or worse yet get rammed by another overzealous yachtsmen trying to catch my wind en route to the finish line....

Thoughts?

Cheers all.

I have been with Boat US insurance for a few years on my homebuilt (23' trimaran). I made a claim the first year, which they covered with no issues. The claim, which hurts to remember, was due to my boat being blown over on her trailer by 100 mph+ wind gusts at Boulder reservoir. Insurance covered the crane to pick the boat up and put back on trailer, and full cost of repair work (mainly cosmetic). Painful lesson learned to use strong tie downs.

Hi. Check your home owner's policy. Some cover boats under a certain length. Good luck. Jer

Two insurance questions for Kilderkin II:

a) Any recommendations for insurer - I see BOAT-US mentioned

b) What value do you use - the sum of the bits, add time, make up a number? Tough to use replacement value as you can't but a built one.

Also, anyone know about registering in MA - I will have a 6hp outboard. I do have a hull ID for the boat (thanks Joey!)

My auto insurance policy covers my boat when I'm towing it behind the car....might be worth a call to your agent.
