Swing Keel finishing

Howdy folks,

I am now painting the hull, and looking ahead to installing the keel. Anyone have any thoughts to painting the keel or leaving it as is as suggested in the manual? I am not really concerned about algae growth, but more looking at the potential to hang up within the keel housing.

One thought I had was that perhaps painting it could keep it from sticking in the keel housing. From basic material properties, the coefficient of friction between identical materials generally doubles, so a painted keel could slide more freely within the housing. From those of you with more experience (John?), it seems that the keel may occasionally hang up, which is why there are the inspection ports to allow you to push it free. Any thoughts as to why it sticks when it does? Getting jammed due to side loads, sand/sea junk wedged in, etc?

Thanks for any thoughts,
Sean
