Hey Guys:

A bit confused here on the procedure to install the keelson. Need your advice.

Here's how I understand the keelson install according to the manual (p.48-49):
1. Epoxy all mating surfaces on the keel. (Including the top of the keel sides that the keelson will lay on???)
2. Put keelson in place. Epoxy keelson/keel mating surfaces
3. Screw keelson down with drywall/bronze screws (where?)(fore and aft?)(screw into lead?)

Thanks

Hi Jimmy,

Lay a good thick layer on top of the keel then slide the keelson over the centerboard trunk and screw it down. A couple of points. First use enough epoxy over the lead in the front to fill up any gaps there. It should be water tight after the bottom is fiberglassed but water has a way of finding it's way into things so no point leaving a void for that to happen in. Second, and this isn't very clear in the manual, the slot in the keelson is oversized to allow a tab on floor #4 to slot into the resulting opening. Make sure the keelson is tight against the aft edge of the centerboard trunk and clean out any oozed epoxy from the slot at the front. Third, the screws should be about 12-14" apart and be careful if you're using drywall screws into lead. The lead grabs the threads better then wood and I had the one at the front snap off. I had to leave it in there which isn't ideal when it starts to rust.
