Hello everyone, I'm new here and already in love with PS... My question is:

The hull speed for a displacement hull of this size is about 5 knots, but from the hull shape of this boat, I would expect it to semi-plan in high wind conditions with the weight positioned as back as possible, and increase that speed limit...
What's your experience on that? Did anyone try to maybe put a trapeze and see if decreasing the heel angle would have any effect on possible planing and speed?

Don't get me wrong, I think it's a beautiful little boat for what it is, and if speed was my first priority I would go for a larger boat, a multi hull, or a 470...
I just want to see if I can take advantage of occasional strong winds to make it go faster.

The boat WOULD go faster, but I'm not sure that approach is really consistent with PocketShip's....vibe. Kind of like turbocharging a sport utility vehicle. I guess I'd rather see trapezes on PocketShip than baggy wrinkle, deadeyes, or figureheads...

I and others have sailed up and over 7 knots on the GPS lots of time in the right conditions. The boat seems to be operating at an S/L ratio of higher than the usual 1.34, probably because of the relatively shallow body and clean run aft (more or less inspired by the Snipe racing dinghy I grew up in). I have noted that when sailing in very heavy air with three adults all sitting to windward, the boat is capable of a truly startling burst of speed. (Before witnesses I once paced a Caledonia Yawl upwind.) From the shape of the wake in those conditions it's clearly starting to climb out of purely displacement mode.

This is still a cruising boat with a ballast keel. It'll definitely surf in waves in the right conditions, but it's never going to climb out and plane like a 470. With the spinnaker up and a fairly heavy crew to keep her upright you'll get an exhilarating broad reach.

I've always wanted a cruising boat with baggy wrinkle. It is unsightly but, "baggy wrinkle" is fun to say. Cheers. Jer aka mtsailor.

If with proper conditions and crew placement the boat can go just a little faster than hull speed, I don't need more...
Actually, even if you told me that this is impossible, I would still go for it cause it's the 'vibe' of the boat, as you say, that intrigues me (I agree that trapezes wouldn't be very matching...).

I have been looking around for quite some time already, for a small cruiser I could built myself, but didn't find anything that satisfied me.
Just when I started thinking of a design of my own, I came across Pocketship, and that's where the inquiry ended...
It's one of the most beautiful little boats I've seen; one that brings out long daydreaming sessions.

I already ordered the manual to have a look, and start organising my garage. Hope to figure everything out, order the plans and start building soon.
