Gaff Retainer Slot . .

On my Tattoo I have increased the design length of the gaff (by about 8 inches) by scarfing an extension [to it]. I did this so that the gaff could rest on the gallows when lowered. In this way I use the gaff as a "ridge poll" for a canopy spread over the cabin hatch and cockpit while anchored or at dock side. Originally, to hold the gaff centered over the boom, I used a small "crutch" that straddled the boom. But now, I don't need the little crutch [for the gaff] because I have cut a small slot on the top of the boom into which the end of the gaff slips. The little crutch is still useful for holding the [lowered] mast slightly above but centered over the boom. But in that case the gaff is not in position and there is no use for the canopy.
