If we could predict accidents -- we could avoid all of them. But accidents do happen, sometimes with tragic consequences. The Coast Guard suggests that skippers prepare a "Float Plan" and leave it with persons on shore. I know my wife, Anna, likes to know where I might be at any point in time. Same for our grown children when traveling. So, I leave a Float Plan with her at home when taking Tattoo on an overnight cruise. I make several copies and leave one on the dashboard of my tow vehicle in the parking lot at the ramp site. If permission is needed to park overnight, then it makes sense to leave a copy with the parking authority so that they will know when to expect you to return. If you have a slip or mooring, a copy should be left with the marina or club management. Attached is a "blank" Float Plan that I designed for Tattoo.
