fillets over varnish

Posted: Tue Sep 04, 2012 10:12 amMerely my opinion - the strength will be determined by the weaker of the bond between the wood to the varnish, and the varnish to the fillet, thus extremely weak. I would sand through the varnish to the wood, nice fillet, re-varnish.

Posted: Fri Sep 07, 2012 12:09 amI agree with Kinderkin here. Rather safer than sorry. There is a lot of reliance of the integrity of the fillets for strength. After all there are precious few fasteners in this boat.

Posted: Wed Oct 24, 2012 11:51 amWhen you think about it, that would be similar to using varnish to glue a stringer in place. I don't think that would hold very well.
