CB pendant holes

I've searched and searched the manual and not found any guidelines on the second hole needed to feed the pendant into the pre-drilled hole for the knot. I have no problem figuring out the size and so on, but I'm curious to know how people have dealt with the possibility of water infiltration. I could always drill it too large and fill then drill a smaller hole, but with a hole that deep it would be really hard to tell if any wood is exposed during the second drilling. Or, I could drill the hole, fill it with varnish for a while, then drain it out and let it dry--but I don't know how reliable that is over the long term (probably very). I could fill the hole with silicon sealer then force the rope through before it sets (what a mess that would be!) None of these methods seems fool-proof--maybe a combination of two or three would be best.

Any of you who have done this already--how did you approach it?
