Boat Building from Geoff Kerr

Postby Shudoman on Thu Dec 11, 2014 2:41 pm

As many of you may or may not know Geoff Kerr of Two Daughters Boat Works built the Prototype PocketShip. His talent is very much on display in a (so far) 39 part video series he's done for OffCenterHarbor.com. The production values on this site are exquisite with some beautiful boats and locations profiled.

This particular video set is on the construction of Iain Oughtreds' Caledonia Yawl which Geoff takes from material selection to final outfitting. Each video is around 20 minutes long and the series is a wealth of tips, techniques and information on building boats with wood and epoxy. Although this boat is not a stitch and glue boat like the PocketShip the techniques still very much apply.

If I had seen these techniques in practice while I was building my PocketShip it would have been faster and, dare I say, better than the way I did many things. In addition to the Geoff Kerr series there is a nice 4 part series on creating a marine electrical system for a small boat. I used this as a template for my electrical system. There is also a recent video from Alec Brainerd of Artisan Boatworks giving a step by step instruction on building an heirloom Herreshoff tiller. I think I may tackle a version of this for my PocketShip in the near future. Off Center Harbor is a for-pay web site specializing in small boats but I highly endorse it if only for this series of videos and I believe it was money well spent.

I am in no way affiliated with the Off Center Harbor website, other than being a subscription member.

Regards,
Bill
