A good rule of thumb is to go one size larger then the manufacture recommends. I carry a 9 lb plow type now after making the mistake of buying a cheap Danforth type that kept slipping. Haven't had a problem since. I should mention I'm on inland lakes so you might want to go even larger if you're on the ocean.

Hey KP

Probably best to know the bottom type that you'll primarily be anchoring in. (mud, sand, rock, grass, other) Then match the appropriate type of anchor that's best for that type bottom. Here in the Chesapeake Bay we mainly have mud and a Danforth works very well. Of course, the right chain, rode, and scope are critical to getting the anchor to 'set' well. Chris's suggestion of 'better to heavy than not heavy enough' is great advice. Consider a spare anchor also for bow/stern anchoring or if you lose your primary. Good luck!
