Jib sheet lead and chainplate locations--need some advice

Looking at the picture on page 269, measurements are given for stem to jib sheet lead and stem to chainplate. I haven't tried this yet, but it looks like I'm going to be trying to measure straight lines with curved wood in the way, especially for the chainplates.

Also, the chainplates are raked, so I need to be sure which part of the chainplate is indicated. It appears to be the top cahinplate hole, though it looks like it is on the toe rail. Or is it the point where the chainplate crosses the toe rail? That would be a problem since you don't really know the rake until you drill one of the holes and use the shroud attached to chainplate and mast tip to determine the rake.

Does this make sense? How have others done this? I think the measurements need to be pretty exact. [Some clarification on following post--no need to worry about measuring around curves.]

Since posting the above I went out and checked on the boat (should have done that first). It looks like you measure from the point of the stem above the bowsprit hole, back straight across the top of the dorade boxes and cabin deck--so no worries about measuring around curves. But I'm still wondering what part of the chainplate to measure to since it is to be raked.
