Spars - chamfering and rounding edges

Postby varuna on Sun Aug 21, 2016 9:55 am

Hi all,

I have been working on the spars and rudder and have some questions about the chamfers and rounding.

I know Dana asked this question before - what chamfering bit did you use on the rudder? I assume the same bit would be used for the chamfers on the bowsprit?

On the tabernacle - how much did you round off the edges?

Thanks,

Hi,
For the rudder I used a 1/2" cove router bit on the bottom side of the rudder cheeks. I couldn't figure how to shape these when attached to the rudder so I routed these ends first before attaching to the main rudder body. I fiberglassed the entire rudder and figured the cove profile would provide a more gradual curve for the fiberglass. For the rudder outside edges I used a 1/2" round over bit. For the bowsprit I plan to use a 45 degree chamfer bit.
