Paint vs Varnish - Interior and Bottom

Postby varuna on Mon Aug 29, 2016 11:00 pm

Hi all,

What paint did people use for the inside of the bulkheads after finishing the fillets and fiberglassing? Did anyone use varnish instead?

What paint did people use for the bottom (below the waterline) and rudder? Which option would be the most durable if you were to keep your boat in the water several days?

How about those who wanted to give the boat a wooden finish - did you just varnish the topsides and the deck/cockpit and paint the rest?

Thanks,
Donna

For the entire interior, I used an oil based house paint from a hardware store. I went with a very light grey color. I wanted the toughness, and durability of an oil based paint - but it does not need a marine paint inside. I do not intend to be repainting much of the interior areas.

Below the water line I used a white, anti-fouling paint from Supermarine. For the topsides and the rest of the hull, I used Supermarine SM-1000 Revoloution.

I ended up with a combination of some natural varnished wood (were I had good Akoume plywood to show), but mostly the topsides are painted. I have attached a picture of my color scheme. I like it a lot.
