Backer Board Wood Type for Removable Tabernacle

I am planning on using a removable tabernacle and wanted to know what type of wood others used for the backing plate?
I was thinking about getting an oak board to use? Per John Harris's design the board should be 10" X 13 1/2". Thoughts?
I am open to other materials as well that would be just as strong.

Thanks

I cut a piece of plywood (to John's dimensions) from remains of the transom material and epoxied that to the bulkhead.

Thanks Mark. I am building from a kit, so my transom was already cut. Good idea, but I don't have any spare.

Thanks
