Same here (Ritchy) with a port bulkhead mounting.

A good place for the compass is on the cabin bulkhead centered under the companionway sill. See pix in my post dated January 27, 2013:

I second Pete's location. It has worked well for the past 3 years on my boat. I give Pete the credit as I saw it on his first.
