VHF radio: Concern

Hey Guys
I was not planning on installing a battery or electronic system on my Pocketship - until I realized I might only have the use of a handheld VHF radio without it - which is a quite a concern because of it's limited range; much prefer a 25 watt system that is normally hooked up to a battery. Does anyone have a suggestion how a 'full power' VHF radio can be used on board without the usual 'hard-wired' battery??
Maybe a solar power system? Maybe bring aboard a small motorcycle type battery to hook it up to? Just at the build point of 'shoot or get off the pot' with this issue; don't know a lot about this stuff; need your sage advice.
Thank you and good luck,
Jimmy V
