Tack welding question

Postby SMHolmans on Wed Mar 27, 2019 12:48 pm

Hi all. I'm about to tack weld my hull together, and I'm curious about how to handle joints where the two faces are already tightly joined. Am I supposed to make sure the joint is filled with epoxy resin, and if so would it be a good idea to back off the wire stitches (or screws) to get the glue into the joint? A good example is the transom, where I have it fitted snugly against the side and bottom panels - it would not be possible to glue the inside faces of the joint together without backing out the temporary screws.

Thanks for your patience!

I don’t think you want to loosen the ties. They should remain tight at the angle that they are in to keep the shape. When you apply the fillets it will fill in any spaces. You will also be covering the fillets with glass on the inside. The outside will be covered with epoxy and glass over the joint as well, so both sides will be holding the joint together. Where two pieces come together with almost no angle, you will use a wide fat fillet. The joint basically will be encapsulated with epoxy and glass on both sides, giving it it’s strength. Hope this helps.

Thanks
