Floor Board Cleat Is Too High!

Hi all. I put a long straight edge across the floors for the first time last night and I was dismayed to find that the cleat for the floorboards on bulkhead 2 is a good 1/2" too high.

Floor 3 is a fraction too low - no problem, I can shim that easily.

But what do I do about the cleat on bulkhead 2 - any suggestions please? I really cannot see what I have done wrong!

Steve,
This has happened to some other builders.

Here is the link to the thread.

You can try to remove the stringer and replace with a new one lower. A hand plane to start and sander for the last little bit should do the trick. Just be very careful. I think William used a Dremel tool to fix, so you have some options.

Thanks.

Fixed the problem. No way was I going to try to remove the original cleat! I sistered it at the correct height, with a backing piece underneath to butt up against the bulkhead.

Now I have twice the designed thickness of cleat for the floor boards to land on, which is great because as designed there really is very little material to which to fix the forward end of the floor boards. It's just too tight for a screw driver or drill driver. Even with a right angle driver.

I was so pleased with the outcome that I sistered the cleat on bulkhead 8 for the same reason - now lots of cleat onto which to fasten the aft end of the floorboards.

Great outcome!

Steve

Nice job! There is usually a solution for every problem. It just requires some thinking!
