Sealant question

Postby SMHolmans on Tue Nov 19, 2019 2:47 pm

I am about to use marine sealant for the first time on my PocketShip. Can anyone recommend a type/brand? Are there any tricks to it's use or application?

Many thanks.

I used the 3m Marine Grade Sealant (green) that CLC sells. I recommend buying the small size or plan to use All in the container for the job. On the package it says must use within 24 hrs.

Thanks Ron.

I have done a bit of research and it seems this is a tricky subject matter! Silicone is recommended for bedding plastic fittings, because it sticks to the plastic and seals the join completely, but NOT for anything else. The 3M polyurethane sealant is recommended for that. 3M 5200 is apparently a permanent bond, so not a good choice if you need to remove a fitting. 3M 4200 is less adhesive so allows parts to be removed - I think that's the green one mentioned by Ron. That's what I will use.

And the main point is to do all the sealing and bonding in one hit, because it spoils so quickly.

Thanks!
