Fitting the cockpit deck panels

Hi all. I will soon be fitting the cockpit deck panels and I am considering cutting access holes where the hatch covers will eventually go, so I can remove the tape and newspaper which I will deploy to catch any epoxy squeeze-out and drips in the stern compartment.

I know that other builders have done this - is it a practical idea? Any top tips on how to do it?

Thanks everyone, and best wishes to all from the UK.

Hey Steve,
I cut the holes in my deck to allow access. I had the hatch covers already, so I was able to see where they would go. Once I knew the location, I just made a rough cut hole. I can’t recall what I used, but drilling a starter hole and using a jigsaw should do the trick. I didn’t get anywhere close to the final cut. Just big enough to put my arm through.

Thanks

Thank you Ron. It was actually your blog that inspired me to ask for views on this! I am going to do exactly what you did.
