Hi all. I hope you're all well and coping OK.

I'm getting close to fitting the seatbacks in my PocketShip, but I want to test-install the hardware fittings in the seatback lockers which will hold the stanchions for the boom gallows before I close up the seatbacks for good. A test fit, to be sure I can make the final installation via the lockers when the seatbacks are all closed up.

My conclusion is that there is very little room in the lockers to secure the stanchion support fittings to the cockpit deck to allow the stanchion to project vertically out through the seatback deck as required by the plans to carry the boom gallows.

In fact, it's impossible! The lockers are too narrow at the level of the cockpit deck to allow this - I'm thinking that some sort of table or flange may be required to raise the fitting high enough to get a truly perpendicular, vertical exit through the seatback deck.

How have other builders tackled this problem, please?

Take a look at the link below. I copied another builder with raising the base where the flange is mounted. I also cut the flange per the manual and was able to get is centered enough to be able to have the poles vertical. I would recommend drilling the holes to mount it before installing the seat backs. It will be much easier!

I thought as much, Ron. My hardware pack contains a pair of beautiful rectangular-based stanchion supports which I am very reluctant to 'modify' with the grinder … I will see what ideas I come up with in the next week or two.

Any other builders had the same problem?

Hi,

Other builders have saved the supplied stanchion supports to mount topside, on the flat at the top of the seat-backs, and epoxied a block within the seat-back locker into which the stanchion support is inserted. That way, the chrome is topside, but the true support is a block within the aft portion of the locker, drilled to receive the inserted stanchion support pole.

I am in process of refitting a Pocketship I purchased from original builder. The block in the seat back pocket is a good way to go. I retrofitted a block in the seat back opening (not fun) but it works great and my ss tubing fits snug enough between base and seatback top it is difficult to remove so don't think I will put stanchion base on at all. The reason I did this was original build had no support in seat back at bottom of tubing just the flange on top of seatback base. That allowed the gallows to move forward and aft if you grabbed them ... not good. What ever you do make sure bottom end of tube is fixed in place.
