Join between forward deck and side panel

Postby SMHolmans on Sun Aug 18, 2019 1:13 pm

I am about to install the lower breasthook and in my test fit I wondered why we don't install a 'ledge' in the storage compartment for the forward deck to sit on, as we do in the sealed bow buoyancy compartment. The build manual calls for a fillet to make the join, which will be messy at the very least.

Any thoughts?

Hi Steve,
I noticed the same thing and went to some of the blogs. There was at least one person's build showing that they installed cleats in that location as well. I am just about to that same point myself and thinking a cleat properly bent to the hull sides would certainly be easier than attempting the upside down position of placing fillets. I thought I might cut a cleat into strips and laminate them in to easily follow the bend in the side.
By the way, are you building with the kit and lumber supplied? I seem to be very short of cleat material and won't have enough to do the footwell. I had a bundle of cleats but didn't count them and have very little waste at this point to assume I was careless.
Regards,
Mike

Thanks Mike. I am thinking the same as you i.e. that a laminated cleat will be easier and more effective than a fillet.

I also do not have enough cleat material for the cockpit. I think the cutting list for the kit must be wrong.

I just checked on my boat and I installed a very ugly fillet! No one will see though. Lol. I think a ledge would work, but I would be careful as to not straighten out the natural curve in the side panels/hull. I can see a stringer doing that. Just something to be aware of if you decide to.

Thanks

Thanks Ron. I am going to laminate stringers from 6mm ply on a former. The thought of making a fillet on an overhead join through a hole in a bulkhead fills me with horror!
