DId I miss something? Epoxy on CB case

Postby Dmksails on Fri Mar 07, 2025 1:57 pm

I've been mostly following the book on assembly of the pocketship and I'm at a point where I'm going to paint the inside. Here is the - possible - issue. I've not epoxied the outside of the centerboard case. I've gone back thru the manual and I don't see anywhere where is says to apply epoxy to the outside of the case. In the section where you assemble the keel its clearly not epoxied. On page 79 where they have the steps for fiberglassing the interior, a pic seems to show the CB case is still bare, but on page 81 it appears to be epoxied. On page 94 where they talk about painting the interior it show the centerboard with paint. So where did I miss this step?

I'm planning to paint the interior with Interlux Toplac Plus, including the CB case. Do I need to epoxy it, or would the Interlux primer and topcoat be sufficient?

BTW - the CB case interior is well epoxied with the last coat having graphite added.

Well, the manual tends to get less detailed with ongoing build and assumes builders will do the required steps by themselves. Another example is the painting of the upper hull, which happens magically by itself between page 252 and 254.

For us it was obvious that all wooden parts need epoxy. The only question is with or without glass. There are various topics in this forum discussing if or not to glass areas like the underside of decks or the bulkheads. But if there is no glass the surfaces will receive epoxy.

The outside of our centerboard case (the surface visible in the cabin) received three coats of epoxy.

ALL wooden surfaces should have 2 or 3 coats of epoxy (and possibly fiberglass). This is especially vital below the waterline!
Be certain that you do no overlook little places like the limber holes alongside the centerboard trunk.

Yes epoxy. As mentioned by others, all wood should get coats of epoxy (preferably 2) whether underneath varnish or paint.
