Battery Location

Postby Dmksails on Sun Apr 20, 2025 3:37 pm

I'm planning to use a Grp22 or Grp24 battery to power the electronics and lights on the ship I'm building. I've seen that a number of builders have placed the battery immediately behind BH2. I'm thinking that it will be somewhat in the way of the gear that will get stored there while underway. I'm wondering if this will work.

I've mocked up the battery with a box. My thought would be to place that battery against BH1. I would add a half-bulkhead between 1& 2 and completely enclose the battery. I've roughed that out with cardboard in the second pic.

I'm wondering is this is going to place the weight too far forward. The Lithium battery I'm thinking of is 20-lbs.

Thoughts?

Given that Lithium batteries are so much lighter than lead-acid ones, I can't see
much harm in locating the battery further forward. I have a Lithium battery, but
it never occurred to me to mount it in an alternate location. And since there
there is no risk of acid leaks or explosive fumes, I don't worry much about stuff
being piled up around it.

Dave,

as you have both bulkheads installed, you could make a 'dry test' of storing bags or boxes between BH #1 and #2. Try with your 'paper box battery' in different locations. My guess: Storing stuff in there is easier with battery installed close to bulkhead #2. Why? First: If the battery is located deeper there is more room above the battery. Second: If you have bulky stuff (that just fits through the cutout in BH #2) it will be easier to get 'around the corner'. Just try.
