Building spars

Postby Dmksails on Mon Aug 12, 2024 7:55 pm

Starting my build with the spars. I will be using douglas fir and I'm starting wit the bowsprit and will need to build it up from two pieces. Question - do I want the seam to be horizontal or vertical? Which would be stronger?

For what it's worth, the stock bowsprit has a vertical seam. But I doubt that strength is the main issue - it is probably based on the size of the timber that was available.

Laminated vertically would be stronger, but as Doug said it may be determined by your timber stock sizes.
I laminated mine vertically, check out the April 2024 post on my Blog

It’s funny: From the figures in the manual it looks like the bowsprit of PS 1 has a horizontal seam.

From the timber that came with the kit, ours was made with a vertical seam.
