Paint question

Postby SMHolmans on Sat Aug 17, 2024 8:47 am

No matter how meticulous I am when painting with gloss paint I always get microscopic bubbles forming after application.
I have tried different brands of paint, and I always use the correct thinners to thin the paint and clean brushes, and I always use the correct primer.
Any suggestions about why this is happening?

Once we had a similar issue when painting the lower hull. The paint seemed 'flat' after application, but one day later it looked a bit like orange skin. We did all according to the manual but finally had no idea what was the cause. Our theory is, that the previous coat was not yet dry enough and the second coat reacted with the first coat and some outgasing happened.

We changed strategy and waited about two days between coats with sanding between coats. No issues since then. I have to say we used two-part paint everywhere.

We did sand the primer with 120 then 240 grit. Between coats of paint we sand with 400 grit.

Added: We never use and clean brushes. We always roll the paint on with a new foam roller. This is immediately (!) followed by a new 10 cm wide foam brush to achieve a smooth surface and get rid of the small bubbles. Only at some tricky corners we use tiny brushes (the cheapest we can get at amazon). For us, the most important and expensive item is the foam brush.
