Options for storing epoxy

Postby Dmksails on Mon Aug 19, 2024 12:41 pm

My kit came with the 4-gallon jugs of resin and hardener. My garage will not be warm enough to keep this there while I build and I'm not thrilled with moving these big jugs between the house and garage and I don't have a space where I could put these big jugs. I've looked online for 1 gallon jugs of the same type this normally comes in and they want $10 for an empty jug (cap is extra)
I buy gallon jugs of water for use on my boat (same as milk jugs). I am wondering if these would work for decanting the epoxy and hardener - my main concern is interaction between the resin or hardener and the jug plastic. I wouldn't use the pumps with these jugs - mainly planning to measure this out with measuring cups.
Anyone done something similar?

I'm sure they will be fine. I have stored epoxy (resin and hardener) in HDPE and PET bottles for a couple of years without any problems.
Just be sure that they are totally dry inside!

Interesting. Our kit from Fyneboats / UK came with two empty 5l jugs just for this purpose.

We never measured volume but always used a kitchen balance to weigh epoxy and hardener. Look for one that can measure with a precision of 0.1g. They are not expensive. But cover the knobs with transparent plastic tape. Most of the time you will only need small quantities.

… and follow the safety tips in the manual :-)
