Fast Hardener?

Postby Dmksails on Sun Aug 25, 2024 4:07 pm

My kit came with a gallon of fast hardener and 4 gallons of slow. I know the fast hardener has a time of about 1 hour and the slow is about 2 hours. I've gone through the manual, but it doesn't indicate where I would use the fast hardener. Did I miss it, or is this up to me?

I've built a pram and a kayak - not sure I would use the fast hardener anywhere, but don't want to waste it either.

The fast hardener is used when your workshop temperature is colder or if you want the epoxy to cure quicker.
The slow hardener is used when the temperature is warmer. Also if you are mixing a larger quantity the slower hardener will give you more time to work with it and reduce it going off in your mixing container before you have used it all.
As far as where to use it, I don’t think it really matters, the strength should be the same it’s just the curing times.
Check out the specs sheet for the specific temperatures and setting times.
Where I live in Australia the temps are quite warm so I use the slow hardener which gives me more working time
I hope this helps
Cheers

It's risky to mix more than several ounces of epoxy at one time with fast hardener. Unless the temperature is rather low,
there is a good chance of it cooking off in dramatic fashion.

But I think it is acceptable to use a mix of fast and slow hardeners, to get a medium-rate cure.
