CB case - relocate inspection ports?

Postby Dmksails on Sun Oct 06, 2024 3:03 pm

I'm getting into the build by working on the centerboard, followed by the CB case. I've read a number of you have decided to move the inspection ports, and that does make sense. I have the kit with includes to inspection port holes. If I want to move the holes I would need to fill these. I assume the best approach to this would be to cut a round filler from the same size stock and epoxy it in place prior to doing the fiberglass.

What I'm not settled on - do I move both, or is moving one better? Thoughts?

Also - are the inspection plates included in any kit? Gone thru the different kit lists, but I don't see it.

After considerable research on the Pocketship Forum I decided to install only one centerboard inspection port and locate it forward. This was to provide access to the pendant knot and sheave location. As I am building from plans, I initially purchased two inspection ports, so I used the second one in the enclosed buoyancy chamber between BH8 and the transom.

We kept the location of these ports as designed. Why?

First, I like to have them opposite to each other, so that you can work from both sides simultaneously. This proved helpful when installing the centerboard pendant: I made a mistake and pulled it entirely off the sheave. With both sides open, it was easy to bring in a light / mirror / tools whatever and to solve this problem (remember the pocketship is upside down for this work).

Second, when reading about dinghy cruising, it seems some people ended up with a jammed centerboard after beaching (sand, gravel between centerboard and trunk). This will be much easier to sort out with inspection holes at their design location.

If one really needs better access to the sheave in the far future, one can always cut a opening later; either at the trunk or through the deck.

Cheers, Dietrich
