Is mixing epoxy with drill press ok?

Postby Dmksails on Fri Jan 17, 2025 6:17 pm

I'm worried I'm doing something wrong when mixing the MAS epoxy. I'm using my drill press with a helix mixing paddle. The press is set at it's lowest speed of 750 rpm. When I mix a batch, it turns milky. I've used it that way when sealing the panels and it dries crystal clear and seems to be very hard. The same when doing fiberglass.

I was on the MAS website and came across a note saying you should not mix it till its milky as it is putting air into the mix and will therefore be not usable.

When I mix by hand, it also seems to get somewhat milky, but not to the extent the machine mix gets.

Am I doing something wrong here?

Hi!
Yes, machine mixing can fill the mixture with air bubbles and this is not very good. When I made large fillets, I also mixed a large portion of epoxy at first and used a drill to mix. But then I realized that it is inconvenient to work with one large portion. It hardens faster than it is used up. Also, if something goes wrong and you need to stop, your large portion will spoil. Therefore, I think it is more convenient to use small portions and mix manually.
One more thing. I have not worked with MAS, but the resin I work can take moisture from the air when it is open for a long time and the climate is humid. Then it gradually becomes milky. When this happens, you can warm the resin up to about 50 Celsius and stir it periodically. The moisture goes away and the resin becomes transparent again.
Maybe this info will be useful to you.
